The following is quoted from an article by The Women's Center.
The Women’s Center’s Be-Good-To-Yourself-Guide For promoting mental health
1. Maintain close friendships and family ties. For emotional support nothing takes the place of a good friend and confidant.
2. Find social outlets. Religious organizations, classes, workshops and other activities give you a sense of belonging.
3. Exercise (20 minutes per day, three days per week) can make a difference in your ability to manage mild to moderate depression and anxiety.
4. Manage your anger. It’s good for your health and your social life.
5. Try to get a good night’s sleep. For adults that’s eight hours a night.
6. Volunteer. Take time out to help someone in need.
7. Make time for yourself each day without feeling guilty.
8. Add humor to your life. Read comics or humorous books; go to a funny movie or comedy show.
9. Pay attention to your appearance. You feel better if you look good.
10. Cut back on time spent with negative friends who bring you down.
11. Reduce the stress in your life. When faced with a stressful situation take a deep breath and exhale slowly to the count of four. Repeat several times.
12. Take time to develop or nurture your creative side. Learn to cook, sew, draw, paint, carve, dance, write, sing.
