Sorry this one is so late to be turned out, but I'm sure you'll all forgive me seeing as how, with no computer, I had no way of getting to it any sooner. So, without further delay, I bring you our newest Band of the Month.
This month's winner is ... Black Sabbath!
Black Sabbath is an English heavy metal band, known to many as the pioneers of metal music. The band originally consisted of lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Terrance "Geezer" Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. They have gone through many change-ups in the casting of band members through the years, including leaving out Ozzy himself. Other band members throughout the years include vocalists Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, David Donato, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillan, and Tony Martin, bassists Dave Sptiz, Bob Daisley, Jo Burt, Lawrence Cottle, and Neil Murray, drummers Vinny Appice, Ben Bevan, Eric Singer, Terry Chimes, Cozy Powell, and Bobby Rondinelli, and occassionally keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, bringing us to the modern-day Black Sabbath, which consists of the original band members.
Black Sabbath was founded in 1968 in Birmingham, England under the name Polka Tulk Blues Band, which they dhortened to Polks Tulk. Later on they changed their name to Earth. After getting confused with another local band by the same name, they changed their name yet again to Black Sabbath, which was the title of a song written by bassist Geezer Butler.
Black Sabbath, at its roots, was inspired by a culmination of blues, jazz, and rock, playing covers of the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Ozbourne was deeply influenced by The Beatles, and has even said that his all-time favorite album is Revolver. The band evolved into the darker sound they are known for through their Butler's fascination with the occult, and when Iommi mentioned people paying money to see a movie that scared them. The latter inspired them to make music's ansewr to horror flicks. Combining their new, darker sound and Ozzy's crazy onstage performances, they found their first album, the self-titled Black Sabbath, to be a success. The band has a long history of drug abuse, often address in their songs.
Black Sabbath has influenced many bands throughout the years, some more obviously than others. Some of the incidences and characters in the spoof rockumentary "This is Spinal Tap" were based on Black Sabbath. Bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Silverchair, and Black Flag have been inspired by Black Sabbath. Soundgarden, Soulfly, Corrosion of ConformityWhite Zombie, Megadeth, Ugly Kid Joe and many more appeared on the series "Nativity in Black: Tribute to Black Sabbath". Black Sabbath has also inspired many less-likely bands, such as The Cardigans, who have occasionally covered Black Sabbath songs on their albums. A few other bands who have covered songs by Black Sabbath include Cannival Corpse, who covered "Zero the Hero" on their single Hammer Smashed Face, Pantera, who covered "Planet Caravan" on their album Far Beyond Driven, and Danzig, who covered "Hand of Doom" on their album Blackacidevil. Elton John is also said to be a huge fan, once saying that it is the only hard rock group he likes.
Black Sabbath became elegible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. After repeatedly being passed over, Osbourne said, "Just take our name off the list. Save the ink." He claimed it irrelevant since the fans did not select the members. The request was ignored, and on March 13, 2006, Black Sabbath was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame by Metallica members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.
Many discographies cite Black Sabbath as having released 28 albums over the years, but after research, I have found 43, which inlcude many live albums, compilations, and unnoficial releases. And likely many re-releases. Here is the list I've come up with:
Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Black Sabbath, Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), The Best of Black Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976), The Best of Black Sabbath (1976), The Original (1976), Never Say Die! (1987), Rock Heavies (1978), Heaven and Hell (1980), Live at Last (1980), Mob Rules (1981), Live Evil (1982), Born Again (1983), The Best (1983), The Very Best of Black Sabbath (1983), The Kings of Hell (1984), The Collection (1985), Seventh Star (1986), The Eternal Idol (1987), The Kings of Hell (1987), Headless Cross (1989), TYR (1990), Backtrackin (1991), Children of the Grave (1991), Dehumanizer (1992), Cross Purposes (1994), Cross Purposes Live (1995), Forbidden (1995), Under Wheels of Confusion (1996), The Sabbath Stones (1996), Reunion (1998), The Best of Black Sabbath (2000), Past Lives (2002), Symptom of the Universe: The Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978 (2002), Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978 (2004), Greatest Hits 1970-1978 (1006), and Paranoid DVD (2006).
Truly, with a list of releases this long, Black Sabbath has earned the spot as our featured Band of the Month.
"So you children of the world, listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in spread the words today
Show the world that love is still alive you must be brave
Or you children of today are Children of the Grave."
